The Kaibutsu (カイブツ Kaibutsu, lit. "monster"?) are a trio of bloody, white-haired schoolchildren that act as the chasers of .flow. Appearing across the world, aggressive Kaibutsu pursue Sabitsuki and, on contact, send her to enclosed spaces that can only be escaped by waking up or using the Arm Effect. Passive Kaibutsu are also present, but if they are attacked with the Iron Pipe, they will become aggressive. As they pursue Sabitsuki, they announce their presence with a distinctive laugh.

Special Kaibutsu also appear in various locations. The aggressive Kaibutsu behind the counter at the entrance of the School can be interacted with to change the menu. The Kaibutsu in the Blood Maze showcases incredible speed once aggravated, and is often called the Candle World Kaibutsu, in reference to the similarly abnormally fast Toriningen that appears in Yume Nikki's Candle World. Another special Kaibutsu, known as the Bar Kaibutsu, can be found in the Sugar Hole, and if attacked, will trigger an Event. This Kaibutsu can also be seen beating a red lump of flesh in the Back Alleyway.

Lastly, unique Kaibutsu that bear a resemblance to Sabitsuki in her Uniform and that wield Iron Pipes are encountered in the Corrupted School and during the Erosion event.

When playing as Rust, the Kaibutsu are replaced by Fetuses.

Appearance

The Kaibutsu resemble Sabitsuki thanks to their white hair, pale skin, and school uniforms. Each has a distinct hairstyle: straight cut, side bangs, and twintails. Their faces are bloody, and become even gorier once they are aggravated. One's face is seemingly just a mass of ragged flesh, another's bright red eyes dangle out from the sockets, and the last has a disproportionately large, toothy mouth.

In the Corrupted School, Sabitsuki is pursued by unique Kaibutsu that resemble her even further and that wield Iron Pipes. Smiling widely and laughing, these Kaibutsu also appear in the Erosion event. When playing as Rust, they violently transform into giant Fetuses, implying that the Kaibutsu may have said Fetuses within them, similarly to Rust.

Trivia

  • In the Western fandom, the Kaibutsu with side bangs, a straight cut, and twintails are often called "James", "Gabe", and "Carrie", respectively.
  • The bloody Sabitsuki that appears holding Oreko's hand in the Industrial Maze is grouped with the Kaibutsu on their spritesheets, suggesting a connection.

Theories

  • There is speculation that the Kaibutsu were people Sabitsuki knew either in the hospital or during her time in school.
  • The Kaibutsu could have been children with a similar disease to Sabitsuki, which led to their current state, a state that Sabitsuki may end up in after the True Ending.
  • Some fans even believe that the Kaibutsu are biologically related to Sabitsuki, since they look similar.
